Zen Juice Appreciation Day
The Club's annual, tongue-in-cheek celebration of course-side scotch and the calm it lends a shaky stroke.
Zen juice is the Club's name for the small flask of scotch that travels in the bag alongside the spare balls and the rangefinder nobody admits to carrying. Its medicinal properties are well attested: a measured nip on the seventh tee has settled more nervous strokes than any swing thought, and a shared pour after a halved hole has done more for fellowship than any rules committee ever could.
Zen Juice Appreciation Day is the occasion on which the Club says so out loud. It is not a drinking holiday—the dosage is medicinal and the walking is mandatory—but an appreciation, in the older sense: a deliberate noticing of a small thing that makes the round better. The juice earns its name honestly. What it dispenses is not courage so much as perspective, the brief and genuine conviction that a bogey is no disgrace and the next hole is a fresh start.
That conviction is, of course, the whole argument of the Club, arrived at by a shorter road. The longer road runs through the Shivas Irons Society.
