The Random Golf Club is the populist cousin, and the one most of us would have met first. Built by Erik Anders Lang into a self-described global community of local golfers, it treats the game as an adventure and a set of stories—its films and gatherings are far more interested in why people play than in how to swing—and it leads with the plainest version of the creed: there is room for everyone on the course. Where the C&RBGC arrives at openness by way of a constitution and a joke about bogeys, the RGC simply opens the door, which is its own kind of honesty.
Mark is a former member—the affiliation lapsed a few years ago—but it belongs on this list as the on-ramp it was. The RGC is where the conviction that golf need not be stuffy, exclusive, or expensive reaches the widest audience, and a small parliamentary two-man society can be glad the wide-audience version exists. It is the populist end of the same belief the Shivas Irons Society holds at the contemplative end.
